The Advisor Down the Street

Most financial advice in Davis County comes from a branch office of a national firm — a name on a building, an advisor assigned to you, and a hand-off to someone new every few years. I built Kimberlite to be the other thing: one independent fiduciary, based in Layton, who answers his own phone.

I'm Ryan Hammett. I spent nearly twenty years in the jewelry business learning that the product almost never sets you apart — the service does — and then built my market discipline inside Fidelity and E*TRADE. When I went independent, I registered the firm here, because here is where I live.

Layton money has a particular shape. A lot of it flows through Hill Air Force Base — military pay, federal civilian salaries, TSP balances that quietly become the family's largest asset. The rest looks like the Wasatch Front generally: 401(k)s from Salt Lake commutes, growing home equity, young families trying to do everything at once. I plan around all of it, in one written plan.

We can meet in person anywhere in the Layton area — or by video, if that's easier with your schedule.

Hill Air Force Base

TSP, BRS, and the Paperwork Nobody Explains

Hill AFB is one of the largest employers in Utah, and yet almost nobody in local financial advice speaks its language. The Thrift Savings Plan is a genuinely excellent retirement vehicle — some of the lowest fund costs in existence — but excellent tools still get used badly: contributions parked in the G Fund for a decade, lifecycle funds chosen at random, the Roth TSP option ignored entirely.

The decisions stack up at every stage. Under the Blended Retirement System, your match depends on contributing enough to earn it. At separation or retirement, the choice to keep the TSP, roll it over, or split the difference deserves an honest analysis — there are real arguments on both sides, and anyone who tells you rolling over is always right is selling something. The Survivor Benefit Plan election is irrevocable in most cases and deserves more than a hallway conversation. And federal civilians under FERS have their own stack: pension, supplement, TSP, and the timing questions that connect them.

I don't take custody of your TSP — nobody can, and that's a feature. What I do is build the written plan around it: allocation, contribution strategy, Roth versus traditional, and how the TSP fits with everything outside it. Education first. It's a conversation, not a pitch.

Kimberlite Financial Services is an independent registered investment adviser and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Hill Air Force Base, the Department of Defense, the Thrift Savings Plan, or any government agency. TSP accounts remain at the TSP — I provide advice and planning; you keep control.

An Honest Checklist

Kimberlite May Fit If — and Probably Doesn't If

This may fit if: you want a written plan before any product talk; you want to approve every trade instead of discovering them on a statement; your money life has outgrown a questionnaire — TSP plus 401(k) plus house plus kids; and you'd rather hear "here's what I'd do and why" than a sales presentation.

It probably doesn't fit if: you're looking for someone to beat the market with rapid trades; you want to hand everything off and never discuss it — my management is non-discretionary by design; or your situation is simple enough that a target-date fund honestly covers it. If that's you, I'll say so on the intro call and point you somewhere cheaper.

Fees are published to the dollar on the pricing page — asset-based management, hourly consulting at $275, or flat-fee planning — billed only in arrears, never in advance.

Common Questions

Layton & Hill AFB FAQ

Do you work with Hill AFB military members and federal civilian employees?

Yes — both. Military pay, the Blended Retirement System, TSP strategy, SBP elections, and FERS benefits for civilians are regular parts of the planning work I do. Kimberlite is independent and has no affiliation with the government; the advice answers to a fiduciary duty to you, nothing else.

Can you manage my TSP account directly?

No one can — the TSP doesn't allow outside managers, and you should be suspicious of anyone who implies otherwise. What I do is advise: allocation across the TSP funds, contribution and Roth-versus-traditional strategy, and how the TSP fits your total plan. You keep the login. You stay in control.

What does a financial advisor in Layton cost?

The full schedule is published on the pricing page: asset-based investment management starting at 1.50% per year and stepping down in tiers, hourly consulting at a flat $275, and fixed-fee planning. Billing is quarterly in arrears — you are never asked to pay in advance.

Do we have to meet in person?

Only if you want to. Layton-area clients often start face to face and move to video for quarterly reviews. Deployments, TDYs, and shift schedules are normal here — the planning process is built to survive them.

I'm PCSing away from Hill. What happens to the plan?

Kimberlite is registered in Utah and serves Utah residents. If you PCS within Utah, nothing changes but the drive. If you leave the state, I'll tell you plainly and help you hand off cleanly — a written plan is portable, and so is the honesty.
